To be a person- an actual person- is, for me, the ability to have and accept the negative parts of your life, to accept the fact you have made mistakes, and that you have fears.
I lie by nature. Maybe not on purpose, but because I do not realize I am lying until I have already said what I have said. Its a natural reflex. For example, when someone asks me how I am, I tend to lie and say that I am okay or fine. It never occurs to me that I am lying then, but then by the time I realize I have lied the person is gone and I realize that lying keeps people from worrying about me.
Like everyone on this planet, I am not perfect. No matter how hard I try to be the ‘good girl’ I always have to be I cannot. I am impure, I lie, I deceive, I am certainly not clean minded, and I enjoy the pleasures of life far too much. This makes me a person.
I begrudgingly accept I have and will make mistakes. I hurt people in the past, I have hurt myself, and I have not been honest about much of my life to many people. I will constantly make mistakes, but that makes me a person. If you don’t make a mistake along the course of your life you are a robot. These mistakes make up our personalities as people, they make up who we are as people. And that makes me a person, because my mistakes make up who I am as a person.
Fears make me a person and human. My being fearful of hurting those close to me makes up most of my personality. My being afraid of making a mistake is why I am shy. My fear of heights is the reason why I am me. My fears make me who I am. Without the fear of something in your life, then you aren't able to be a person because you have not accepted the negatives in your life. If I never admitted that I have fears and ignored the fact I am terrified of some things than I would be rejecting my personality and thus me as a person.
I am a person because of my mistakes, of my fears and of the part of my life that I should and am ashamed of but I accept. I am a person because all of these things make up who I am and why I exist. These things have shaped my personality and the world I see.
And that is what it means to be a person.
